< back to summary 2.4 Istanbul Airport Extended by Sandwich Elements - Made in Germany
The Sabiha Gökçen International Airport is currently being adapted for increasing air traffic and comprehensively extended. Here, the architectural focus is the international check-in building, which, with its curved roof shape and double-rounded roof edge, conjures up the lightness of flying in the observer. The architect's starting point was that this lightness could also only be achieved with lightweight building materials during the planning considerations. Together with the local representatives of Hoesch Siegerlandwerke, solutions for the roof-bearing shell, roof edge and the lower facing of the roof overhang were sought. The extremely good experience with HSW construction products during the building of Bodrum Airport was decisive. One particular technical challenge was the design of the roof edge. Here, a reference object in the shape of the new Munich trade fair (the former Riem Airport) was successfully created and much noticed by specialists. The possibility of physically showing this successful roof design to the client occurred during a trade fair visit at BAU Natura.
It was decided that the solution lay in curved Isowand elements, which fulfil the required characteristics thanks to their low net weight, high insulation properties and the possibility of tailoring to the pre-determined sub-construction. An additional demand was to take into account the movement of the building due to thermal and static loads. It was the fastening technology, an invisible securing method using curved aluminium joints, that convinced the planning team. The roof shells of the elements consist of pre-lacquered aluminium covering shells in the shade RAL 9006.
The elements were curved in the factory using a special manufacturing process. Extra attention had to be paid to secure packaging as a result of the transport taking place by HGV. For the 4,500 m² of sandwich elements, of which 2,000m² were curved, the Turkish installation company required 40 days, during which time stormy weather conditions presented their own special challenges. The lower surface of the overhanging roof section was also enclosed with Isowand elements. Here, the tube struts of the sub-construction had to be passed through the elements cleanly.
In the case of this project, the good sound absorption values achievable with the large holed surfaces in the upper flange were decisive, together with the visual appearance as seen from within the building.
In association with the steel sub construction, the pre-lacquered surface, finished in shade RAL 9003 (signal white) of the Pladur Z coating system, further intensifies the impression of filigree harmony. The roof surface, 14,000m² in size, was laid in four weeks. There were no problems. After the conclusion of the work, a subsequent order for the Inland check-in building in the same design was given. The check-in building of the Sabiha Gökçen Airport joins a long list of airport projects carried out with HSW products, such as Malpensa Milan, Munich, Leipzig, Dresden, Cologne-Bonn and Hong Kong.
